Toyota will be launching the Prius Plug-in in Portland and nationwide, announces Portland Toyota dealer Berlin City Toyota of Portland Maine.  On December 2 Toyota donated two Prius Plug-in Hybrids to the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and three have been given to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a part of a demonstration program.

The Prius Plug-in is designed to be fully charged in 3 hours on a 110-volt connection and can last 13 miles running purely on electricity but once the electricity is up the vehicle reverts back to Hybrid mode that gets between 48 and 51 mpg.  Toyota hopes that this is only the beginning of government and businesses being converted exclusively to electric and/or Hybrid vehicles for transportation.

“New York City has one of the world’s most aggressive and comprehensive sustainability plans – PlaNYC, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030,” said New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “Reaching our goal means having a more efficient vehicle fleet, and Toyota continues to be a great partner for City government, which has the world’s largest fleet of hybrid vehicles. I want to thank Toyota for making us a part of the Plug-in Hybrid vehicle program and generously providing these cars at no cost to the taxpayer.”

By 2012 Toyota plans to deliver 160 Prius Plug-in Hybrids across the country as a part of the demonstration program.  Not only will the NYCDOT and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey save taxpayers dollars with the use of the Prius but this will allow Toyota to gather research on the cars while being used day-to-day to improve the technology.
